Case Study: National Film Awards UK

The National Film Awards UK is a prestigious annual event organized by the National Film Academy to honour the accomplishments of filmmakers, actors, actresses, production companies, and crew members who contribute to the vibrant motion picture industry.

Event agency and organizers Invincible Media Group sought a highly skilled audio-visual hire and technical production company to collaborate on this illustrious awards ceremony. Humphries Audio Visual (HAV) was the chosen partner tasked with delivering a sophisticated technical solution befitting such a high-profile event.

Held at London’s iconic Porchester Hall, a Grade II* listed building with a rich history of hosting celebrated pop music acts like Ed Sheeran, Snow Patrol, Amy Winehouse, Pink Floyd, and Kylie Minogue, the event demanded a setup that captured the glamour and grandeur of the occasion. HAV rose to the challenge, transforming the venue with an exceptional AV package that included sound, lighting, vision, set build, draping, and cameras.

The Technical Solution

For the main hall, where guest presenters invited award winners onto the stage, it was crucial that all attendees had a clear view of the screen displaying the animated video deck provided by Invincible. HAV’s solution involved a large central rear projection screen as a stage backdrop, flanked by two slightly smaller front projection screens on either side. Optoma EH460ST short-throw projectors were used throughout the hall to save space and cost.

Invincible furnished a detailed run list of video and audio content, which included voice of God (VOG) announcements, pre-recorded video stings, pre-selected audio tracks, and slides/logos. HAV’s technical team employed professional cueing software Q-Lab to create a pre-configured show, ensuring seamless and precise AV playback throughout the event.

The main screen featured a stock set constructed with white flats and an integrated rear projection screen. This set could be illuminated in the client’s choice of colours, with a dynamic colour scheme changing throughout the night.
To heighten the visual experience, moving head wash, and beam effects were positioned on the stage floor, creating an engaging light show with patterned gobos and panning/tilting beams of light projected into the audience.

During the ceremony, HAV’s vision technicians controlled the on-screen action by skilfully mixing footage from two on-site Blackmagic broadcast cameras with the main video slide deck using a Roland V-8HD multi-format video mixer.

Given the event’s nature, it was essential to ensure clear audio for all attendees, from nominee videos and presenter announcements. HAV specified a powerful sound system comprised of 8x McGregor Amplification FR-15 full-range units and 4x FR-18 sub-units, along with wedge monitors for clear on-stage audio monitoring. A Behringer X32 digital mixing desk was employed for control.
HAV’s sound technicians attended to the needs of live performers, including singer/songwriter Lauren Cofie, recording artist Kirby Frost, and female vocal trio So Diva, all of whom appeared on The Voice UK.

The Outcome

The HAV team’s diligent efforts ensured flawless technical execution, impressing the audience with the event’s striking ambience. Notable winners included Idris Elba, who took home Best Drama and Best Director for his directorial debut, Yardie. Ricky Tomlinson received Best Supporting Actor for Gloves Off, and Michael Caine was honoured with the Global Contribution to Motion Picture award.

‘Your team was amazing & could not have been more attentive. Let’s do the same set up, same venue for the Urban Music Awards next year..’
